    Review | The Bell Jar

    December 26, 2018

Esther Greenwood is at college and is fighting two battles, one against her own desire for perfection in all things - grades, boyfriend, looks, career - and the other against remorseless mental illness. As her depression deepens she finds herself enclosed in it, bell-jarred away from the rest of the world. This is the story of her journey back into reality.

  • How far along are you in your Feb TBR?
..
Here's a list of books I wanted to read in February, but realistically I'll be lucky to finish Americanah (which I've already started) + another one.
..
The reason for that is that I'm rereading HP 1 in Portuguese as language-learning practice and that takes time, but feels really rewarding.
..
60 pages in Americanah I can safely say that I like Adichie's fiction-writing style as much as her essay-writing style.

  • Do you ever find that there are books you liked and that sucked you in, but you definitely can't say "oh I enjoyed it"? That was Sadie for me. I loved the novelty of the format, and I loved reading it and listening to it. That said, it comes with TW for child molestation and parental negligence.
..
Sadie was such a determined, desperate, grieving character and I felt connected to her very quickly. I thought the unravelling of the story on 2 levels, Sadie's and the podcast's, gave room for the story to develop rather than get dumped on us in a chunk. I enjoyed the writing and I could not put it down. What I also found very effective and compelling is how Sadie, on some occasions, starts from the present (observing a child on the swing / falling asleep) and then floats into a memory of her childhood without telling you when the memory starts.
..
I'd like to go more into the little details that made this book for me, but I'm afraid I'll go into spoilers, so I'll just leave it at⭐⭐⭐⭐ and 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 @summerscourtney

  • As soon as I started Sadie, I regretted not listening to the audiobook, so I used up my Audible credit and now I'm listening to the podcast chapters and reading Sadie's chapters. So far, very much into it, and it grabbed my attention from the first chapter.
..
It's freezing in London today, so I'll be under my 2 duvets reading, please and thank you.
..
"Sadie hasn't had an easy life. Growing up on her own, she's been raising her sister Mattie in an isolated small town, trying her best to provide a normal life and keep their heads above water.
.
But when Mattie is found dead, Sadie's entire world crumbles. After a somewhat botched police investigation, Sadie is determined to bring her sister's killer to justice and hits the road following a few meager clues to find him.
.
When West McCray―a radio personality working on a segment about small, forgotten towns in America―overhears Sadie's story at a local gas station, he becomes obsessed with finding the missing girl. He starts his own podcast as he tracks Sadie's journey, trying to figure out what happened, hoping to find her before it's too late."

"Marcus Conway has come a long way to stand in the kitchen of his home and remember the rhythms and routines of his life. Considering with his engineer's mind how things are constructed - bridges, banking systems, marriages - and how they may come apart.
.
Mike McCormack captures with tenderness and feeling, in continuous, flowing prose, a whole life, suspended in a single hour."

  • I'm making great progress on my reading goals, and not only in terms of numbers. (I've written about them on my still-fresh blog if you're curious).
..
One goal is to finish a series before I start a new one, because I get distracted and then leave them and then forget what happened in previous books and it's a mess.
..
I'm finishing His Dark Materials, which more than lives up to my memories and expectations. What a world (or 100)! I've flown through the first 2 and The Amber Spyglass is no different.
..
PS: I think it's great for someone looking to get back into reading. It's a plot-heavy fantasy world, but it still has interesting themes and beautiful writing.

  • I've reading at lunch break the past few days, and I'm surprised by how easily can shut out office chatter. A good book helps too. Miranda July has a very unique style and I'm intrigued to read her novel now. This was a short collection of short stories, and as is always the case, some were stronger than others. Some are also stranger than others.
.
I'm in the group of people who enjoyed this. July can write and she has a distinct voice. It didn't feel weird just for the sake of being weird. Some stories are so vivid, that just stick with you.
